Brickworld Virtual GBC - June 2020

Virtual GBC - June 27, 2020

For the second time this year, I will be participating in the Brickworld Virtual GBC loop alongside several other talented builders.  There will be 10+ loops displayed, and I will be co-hosting alongside  Bob Luzenski, and GBC Legend Tom Atkinson.

I'm sure we will see a ton of new modules this weekend, I will be debuting several myself.  Hope to see you there.

Information on the event and how you can purchase a pass to join in can be found here: https://brickworld.com/brickworld-virtual/

Video of my Lego GBC loop that was shown at the Brickworld Virtual Con Spring 2020

I recently participated in the Virtual GBC loop that was happened at the Brickworld Virtual Con event, last Saturday.  5 other builders and myself prepared a home layout and then walked through it while answering questions and providing some additional information on each module in the layout.  Hosts Bob, Rafe, and special guest Tom Atkinson kept things interesting and enjoyable as we ran through each of the loops twice.

It was a fun time and I hope to participate in the June show as well.

BrickCon 2019 - Just Build It!

I recently attended BrickCon for the second time, and the GBC layout was the biggest it’s ever been!   15 builders provided 60+ modules, and the total runtime was 15 hours over 3 days.  Plenty of familiar faces re-appeared in the GBC pit along with some new ones, was a pleasure to run GBC with everyone there.  🥳

I brought down 20 modules and displayed 14 due to table space constraints.  I provided a 15th as a filler when needed on the other side of the loop.  We ran out of room this year and filled up all of the tables, perhaps next year we will have some more space. 🤔

Several of my modules were “first time public” displays including Money Bin, Multi-Path, my updated Shared Power Circus, and Old Town Road.

Multi-Path showed that it needs a small amount of tweaks but ran wonderfully the entire event which is great news because a path splitter is something I want to keep in my collection permanently.

Money Bin on the other hand had a serious issue the entire event.  Balls would jam up inside the output chute and required unjamming fairly often.  I will have to increase the width of this chute if I decide to keep the module (unsure at this time).

Old Town Road was fine after we shimmed one side of the ring to ensure balls would exit more reliably.

I almost forgot to mention how terrible RISE + RUN performed due to poor piston design on my part.  The module was on the table for maybe 5 minutes before it jammed up, was repaired and continued to jam up.  I removed it from the layout for the remainder of the show.

Splatiyuki and Lawrie’s Compact Cardan which had some run time previously at a local maker faire ran without any issues as well.

Other Interesting Modules

Diego’s GBC Tower.  This 6 foot monster dominated the GBC layout drawing in big crowds to view how the 6 stacked Akiyuki mechanisms all worked together.  Diego’s custom controller was also very cool, it used an older Technic Dacta serial interface to connect to a tiny windows PC where he could control the motor speed through a touch screen.  Diego was on point making adjustments and rebuilding portions of the module throughout the event.  He fixed several issues that were happening in the input area, as well as up at the top near the Cyclodial Drive.

Kevin and his wife Susan built two new Achemedes screws that used 3 coils instead of the usual 1 or 2, and they looked great.

John’s new steppers and overpass.  John built a BVB stepper and another switchback stepper which looked great when running.  The switchback had some issues but was never pulled from the layout, as there was a quick fix for it each time.  Big thanks to John for providing one of the two walk-under overpasses for the event, it ran well for a first-timer and any issues it had were quickly fixed.

Amanda’s Hungry Caterpillar.  Amanda had been working on BVB’s rainbow wave last year, and this year it pupated into the Hungry Caterpillar.   This module looked great when running, however it  was plagued with issues for the first two days.  By day 3 it appeared to be dialled in and ran well, it was a crowd pleaser for sure!

Newcomer Caebin brought a real monstrosity of a module called Patchwork.  It did not meet the standard and had various different mechanisms inside to move the balls around.

In order to integrate it into the layout, Dave De Gobbi provided a small chain lift which was able to get balls into the machine.  Caebin was working full time on this module during the public hours since it had a tendency to get clogged up.

GBC Theme Winners
New Balls on the Block - Patchwork (Caebin Robinson )
Can’t Stop Staring - Hungry Caterpillar (Amanda Payton)
Physics Buster - The Throne (Matt Norman)
OMG GBC! - GBC Tower (Diego Baca)

Overall it was a wonderful event, and I’m looking forward to the BrickCon GBC 2020!

What's in my GBC convention kit?

As I prepare for a few upcoming events I thought I would share what's in my GBC parts/repair/utility kit that I bring with me to conventions.  My current kit is stored inside a small Plano fishing tackle organizer, adorned with some various Lego/Convention related stickers.

Inside everything is somewhat organized with different tools/parts stored in their own section.  From top left to bottom right is the following:

  • New Spare Motors: 1XL, 1L, 1M.
  • Larger Technic Bricks & Beams, Technic Plates
  • Spare Gears (2+ of each type)
  • Technic Pins, Bushings and Telescopes.
  • Various Technic Beam Variants (Dogbones, T's, Biscuits, HassenPins, etc)
  • Technic Connectors (all sizes)
  • Axles (2+ of most sizes), Spare Sprockets (1 of each size)
  • Smaller Technic Bricks
  • Tools, Larger Pieces, Sharpies, Labels, Pocket Knife, Brick Badge & Promo Bricks.

Here's a closer look at some of the parts stored inside.

One essential item I would also recommend you bring is Masking Tape.  You can use it to label various things like train controllers, wires, or modules.

What is inside your toolkit, and what do you store it in?  Am I missing some essential items?  Leave a comment below.

Titans of GBC collaborating @ Skærbæk Fan Weekend

Beyond the Brick has announced that 3 of the world's most influential GBC builders will all be participating in the GBC @ the Skærbæk Fan Weekend on the 28th and 29th of September later this year.

Akiyuki Kawaguchi from Japan

Tom Atkinson from the USA

Maico Arts from the Netherlands

This will be the first time these GBC heavyweights will be collaborating and should make for an epic layout.  I'm hoping they bring some never before seen modules to display for this special occasion!

8 minutes @ BrickCan 2019 plus module breakdown details.

I've uploaded the last of the BrickCan 2019 footage in this 8 minute video showing several clips of the GBC loop up close.

Here is a list of my module failures/breakdowns during the event.  (Dropping balls is not included in this list)

EV3 Counter

I left the brick powered on with the program running when I went home on Friday night after the Friends & Family event.  I realized this at home and brought new batteries for the next session on Saturday morning, sadly the Brick was completely wiped, my program was gone and brick settings like "Sleep Timer" were reset to default

Solaire

The well known jam that can occur if balls gets trapped between the technic connectors and the ramp drop in as it is rotating.  This happened several times, but the module is now clutched so it was a quick clear/fix by putting the module in reverse for a second.

Whirligig/Ronald

After 4 hours or so of runtime balls started to get jammed between the pushing axles and the exterior walls.  This was fixed at the show by changing the axle holding the exit beams/axles from a 10 to a 12 and adding a 2L beam w/ axle hole to brace the wall at the outside.

GBB-8C2

Frequent anti-jam activations, this was due to the un-level table.  I had to shut it down a few times, once to clear out a 2x2 tapered round brick (droid head) that somehow made it's way up into the pump.

Jade Dragon

The output piece inside the dragons mouth (1x4 black tile) would sometimes fall off if the speed was too high, this happened around 3-4 times throughout the event.  It was easy to fix and keep the module in the loop.

Chicken Pump

The module was not built using all of the bracing included in the original BrickWorld 2018 instructions so it anti-jammed enough that it eventually tore itself apart.  It was repaired and reinforced but continued to open itself up.  I eventually removed it from the loop on day 3.

After it exploded the first time, someone in the crowd pointed to the TNT brick and said that was the problem.  😂

Matt's Mine

The 3rd step in my stepper was getting worn in and started to wobble and pop on each stroke.  I tried to repair it, but it would require a bit of a rebuilt with brick I didn't have handy so it was removed on Day 3.  Lawrie showed me some ideas on how to rebuild it to fix the issue which I will be doing sometime soon.

BrickCan 2019 GBC Report

BrickCan 2019 has come to an end, and the GBC layout that suddenly appeared on Thursday has now faded away.

Here are the stats we recorded on Day 1 (Friday)

Number of Modules: 56
Number of builders: 8

Layout Length: 20m
Length x Width: 6.8 x 3.5

Number of Balls: 400
Average Ball Lap time: 11 minutes

Highlights for me include

Dave DeGobbi bringing a proper elevated gateway module.  This is the first time we had one at BrickCan, and I don't think I can go without it ever again.  The module had a larger version of his "cheesy buckets" cheese spiral to lower the balls which seemed to work well and also had the ability to mesmerize the public.

Everyones reaction to the Toilet Module I brought.  There was lots of laughing and shouting "IT'S A TOILET" all weekend.

Lawrie flying in from New York with his famous 9 hole putt putt golf layout.  Seeing it in person was very cool!

Running the GBC

BrickCan is a bit strange in that the public sessions are in 2 hour blocks, with a 30 minute break in between.  This allows for scheduled breaks to eat, rest, or fix modules which is great!

Lots of modules needed fixing including my Chicken Pump module which exploded twice, and continued to have issues even after being repaired/reenforced.

It was really hot because the lighting is poor in that area so they add a few standing lamps which seem to emit a lot of heat. This made standing around quite tiring, I think next year we will have to bring some fans or get them from the venue.

The public was good, with very little module grabbing, however lots of dropped ball grabbing was going on, and someone tore down 2 sides of the fencing at some point on the last day.

In Conclusion

It was a good event, and a great GBC layout!  I learned quite a bit and also had some fun.

BrickCon 2018 - Hidden Worlds

BrickCon 2018 was the largest Lego convention I've attended, and it was awesome!  It was a 4-day event, and I met a lot of great people, and saw some amazing builds.  It was quite a bit of effort to bring down all my GBC, luckily the loading zone was very convenient to get stuff in and out of the Convention Hall.

The Convention Hall
The show was so big, and I was so busy with the GBC I'm sure I didn't see 50% of the mocs that were being displayed.  I also didn't even see half of the vendors that were set-up.  Even though it was a big open space with 20+ foot ceilings it still got very warm inside during public hours.  The GBC theme had several 8x5 tables to display on.

The GBC Layout
For day 1 we ran several smaller individual layouts.  My layout consisted of the following modules:  Matt's Mine, Solaire, Tri-Sep, WM-01, Lego Boost Pachinko, Reservoir, Greylime XL, and my "Bacon" Bridge.

The highlight of the event was on Sunday afternoon when we decided to hookup all the GBC modules into a massive single loop.  Everyone had to work together to figure out how to get it done because some of the GBC layouts were setup clockwise and not counter-clockwise as per the standard.  The Beyond the Brick team shot a video of the continuous layout so be on the lookout for that in the near future.

GBC Theme Winners
Belle of the Balls - Greylime XL (M Norman)
Iron Baller - Up-and-Over (J Sherman)
Contraptionist - Great Bat Contraption (K Mitcham)
Rookie of the Gears - Waterwheel (D De Gobbi)

My personal favourite GBC Mocs
Kevin's Arduino Train, John's new Technic built bridge, Dave's Cheesy Spiral widget and the rotating turntable on Justins module.

I had a great time, and am looking forward to the next convention, hopefully BrickCan 2019 in May!

The weekly observer post will be up tomorrow!

Road to BrickCon 2018 Seattle

So I have the hotel booked, and the convention tickets purchased.  I'm going to BrickCon 2018 in Seattle, Washington this October.

I am planning on bringing quite a few of my GBC modules:

  • Greylime XL
  • Reservoir
  • Matt's Mine
  • Morgan's Mine
  • Upslide
  • Shared Power Circus (Jumbo, Grey Glass,  D.R.O.P. & Whirligig)
  • Bridge/Bypass Module
  • Solaire
  • Jade Dragon
  • Lego Boost Module + Additional Bypass Module
  • Tri-Sep
Along with that I need to bring all the support items as well:
  • Power (Supplies, Extensions, Splitters)
  • Tablecloths
  • Extra Pieces
  • Retaining Wall
  • Promotional Material
For this trip I will be packing my modules in some "Really Useful Boxes" of various sizes.  I decided on these containers because I don't want the modules squished when loaded into the car with luggage and a baby stroller placed on top.  The really useful boxes are quite durable and won't flex when being compressed.  I have already started making custom cardboard separators for inside the containers to help keep the modules stable and separated.  As well, I've "Upcycled" an old yoga mat and cut it up into pieces to line the bottom of each box.  This provides a bit of cushion and eliminates any chance that the modules will slide around inside the boxes.

Along with all of this stuff I will be bringing a folding "Hand Truck" and some Bungee cords.  Sometimes when you are loading in and out of a Lego Convention you need walk quite far from your vehicle so this makes it easier and safer to move your modules.

I'm looking forward to another weekend of GBC fun, be sure to stop by and say hello if you are going to be there!

BrickCan 2018 GBC Layout Videos

Here is a few videos of the GBC layout from BrickCan 2018.  You will notice that there is a few more modules running on Day 1, including the Akiyuki Train.  But after 8 hours of operation, a few modules were removed or replaced for Day 3.

The Day 3 video is full of Great Ball Pit module fails, including: Tilt-Shift overloading itself, Pumping Station Jamming, BB-8 Loader Exploding, and BB-8 needing some manual stimulation.

Enjoy!

BrickCan 2018 GBC Layout Report 🇨🇦🏀⚽️🇨🇦

BrickCan 2018 has come and gone.  The GBC layout at the show was the biggest it's ever been at BrickCan, and possibly the largest on the west coast of North America.  The final total of modules still in service for the Sunday public hours was 43.

7 builders collaborated on the layout over the weekend:

  • Dave De Gobbi
  • Jason von Innerebner
  • John Sherman
  • Kevin Mitcham
  • Matt Norman (GreatBallPit)
  • Spencer Dickson
  • Steven Walker
Best GBC Module Award went to Hippos GBC by Spencer Dickson

The layout was run in 2 hour sessions with a 30 minute break during the public hours.  We had a total of 7 sessions bringing the total runtime to a little over 14 hours including testing and video work.

And now for a report on how my modules I ran at the show:

  • GreyLime - Balls would sometimes jam up the top of the conveyor.
  • Tri-Sep - No issues
  • Inclination Pumping Station - Tipping Ramps were a bit slow, ball pump would jam up frequently.
  • D.R.O.P. - Was running too slow, I modified it after day 2 to run at 3x speed for day 3.
  • BB-8 Loader - Exploded multiple times due to the teeth pieces separating from the axles and getting caught on brick.  This module needed to be stopped every 30 min to reseat the teeth to prevent the explosions.
  • GBB-8C - The gravity fed hopper would back up frequently and needed to be cleared manually.
  • Trench Run - No issues
  • Morgan's Mine - No Issues
  • Solaire - Day 2 and Day 3 a few moments of balls binding when being pushed out of the module, I think this is due to the yellow wheel becoming loosened (didn't appear to be an issue after making sure it was put together properly)
  • Reservoir - No Issues beyond outputting too fast
  • Upslide - Multiple failures: Input bin walls popped off, ball pusher started to bind strange, I had to repair a major issue with the rotational pushers drive  gear slipping.
  • Tilt-Shift - Input bin agitator failed multiple times on day 3, and was also popping balls out of the hopper non-stop.  This would result in extra balls falling into the lift mechanism overloading it so that no balls could rise to the next level.
  • Ball Bridge - No issues after doing repairs to the hopper on day 1.
  • Roadwork Redux - Running in stand-alone mode, multiple jams at the pump.

Modules brought but not run:

  • Mine Loader Remix
  • Container Yard Remix
  • Bucket Boost
  • GBCRamps Backup

I now have a lot of rebuilding and tweaking to do, as well as breaking down a few modules, that I no longer feel are reliable enough for public display.
